A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Adapted
(with live Celtic harp accompaniment)

December 18 – 24

At historic Emily Carr House, with a special Christmas Eve performance at The Little Fernwood Hall

This two-person adaptation of the timeless classic became a holiday tradition in Victoria from 1997 through 2004, delighting audiences of all ages. Performed by Clayton Jevne and Sandra Ritter, A Christmas Carol succeeds in capturing the intimacy and poignancy of a story written to delight and inspire. Both actors share in assuming the various roles, while Sandra also weaves musical magic throughout the show with her Celtic harp. This is a fully acted play, with the actors shifting seamlessly from one character to another, creating a magical experience.

“Just might be the best version of this show I’ve ever seen… Jevne restores a measure of dignity to Carol… 90 minutes of great storytelling with beautiful Celtic harp accompaniment. ” —Monday Magazine, Victoria

UVIC SPOTLIGHT ON ALUMNI
October 13 – 22, 2011
By Kyle Jarrow
Produced by Theatre Inconnu
Directed by Clayton JevneFrom the Obie Award-winning playwright, this critically acclaimed rock musical blends music and drama for a thought-provoking examination of the criminal and psychological aftermath of two teenage lovers following their shooting spree. Embroiled into this real life saga, based on the 1958 murders by Charlie Starkweather, are the small town sheriff who detains them and his wife, who are under pressure to get a confession by dawn. All four are forced to examine their own humanity and assume responsibility for their actions. Advisory: Partial nudity, mature subject matter and strong language.

REVIEWS:

“… a compelling and entertaining production. Jarrow forces us to consider that spree killers are people too… he merely advocates for humaneness and open-mindedness. And that’s never a bad thing.”
Times Colonist

“Love Kills… and it rocks too!” “Go see it; you may not come out humming, but you certainly won’t be disappointed.” Monday Magazine (Top Pick, Nominated for M Award for Best Musical)

Shining City opened at the Royal Court in 2004 and prompted the London Telegraph to describe him as “the finest dramatist of his generation…” It subsequently opened on Broadway in 2006 and was nominated for two Tony Awards, including Best Play.

In Dublin, a man seeks help from a counselor, claiming to have seen the ghost of his recently deceased wife. But what begins as just an unusual encounter becomes a struggle between the living and dead — a struggle that will shape and define both men for the rest of their lives.

“Shining City is as close to perfection as contemporary playwriting gets… quiet, haunting and absolutely glorious.” —New York Times

“His sentences are better, his sentiments more developed than many Booker Prize-winners. He is terrific.” —Observer

“At his best Conor McPherson is a writer who combines great character comedy with a real sense of pathos. And this is Conor McPherson at his very best … Guilt, sex and therapy with a script from acting heaven. Shining City is certainly Conor McPherson’s writing at its most inspired.” —Daily Mail

Stephen Mulrine’s adaptation and translation of Venedikt Yerofeev’s novel Moscow to Petushki – A Canadian Premiere!

Moscow Stations brings Inconnu’s main creative forces together as Graham McDonald directs Clayton Jevne in this endlessly fascinating and explosively imaginative tale. While traveling on a train to see his girlfriend and his infant son, Yerofeev’s hero experiences his life to excess on every level: sexual, religious, political, whimsical, and social – all permeated with a sense of irony. This story is filled with humour, and at the same time provides a surreal dissection of human nature. Moscow Stations has been widely produced throughout Europe, but is virtually unknown in North America. In keeping with our mandate to surprise audiences with choice selections and “famous unknown” plays, we are very excited to introduce you to this piece.

In the words of the New York Times: This play is about “a messiah who has abandoned his flock and now wants only to put his own frayed life in order”

“Jevne’s performance at Wednesday’s opening was strong. Acted in a slightly heightened style, his Venya is, appropriately, a bristling mass of contradictions. Confidently directed by Graham McDonald, Jevne holds our attention with deft use of movement and gesture. Although he acts on a tiny, triangular stage, his performance was surprisingly physical, even athletic. Jevne also cleverly captured the various characters that enter and exit Venya’s strange life.” ~ Times Colonist

It was a real treat to see a show such as this later on in its run (it’s actually been extended to January 15) and watch Jevne’s masterful performance. This absurd-but-poetic script is quite a mouthful, and director Graham McDonald has him stumbling all over —and around — Little Fernwood’s tiny stage. I never thought a meditation on the hiccup would be so entertaining and enthralling. ~ Monday Magazine
