BAD JEWS

BAD JEWS
by Joshua Harmon

Feb 16 – Mar 5

Three young Jewish adults – Daphna and her two cousins: brothers Jona and Liam; along with Melody – Liam’s non-Jewish girlfriend – find themselves together in the aftermath of the grandfather’s funeral. A vicious and hilarious brawl over family, faith and legacy ensues. This is a play that probes deeply – yet humourously – into our need to be both embraced by, and acknowledged as distinct within, the community with which we choose to align ourselves: be it based in faith, kinship, or friendship. The dialogue is blistering and riveting as each character strives to attain this balance.

“A zesty play… The best comedy of the season.” New York Times

A Lie of the Mind

LIE OF MIND

A LIE OF THE MIND
by Sam Shepard

May 3 – May 21

Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind is a play filled with enormous vitality, and humor. Prior to the play’s opening, the action is set in motion by a severe domestic beating that leaves Beth, a young wife, brain damaged; at the hands of her husband Jake. The story is one of shifting focus between the two families – that of the victim and that of the abuser – as we experience how family members cope with the aftermath of Beth’s injury. This is a play that does not shy away from taking a gritty look at an issue all too commonly ignored.

“Creative use of the small space….With the focus on acting he [director David MacPherson] solicited strong moments from the company…  For anyone who admires Sam Shepard’s plays… this is a wonderful chance…” Monica Prendergast, CBC Radio

Anyone who has ever loved or lived in a family will understand the primordial tug to the heart of ties that entwine and cannot be loosed…   A Lie of The Mind is rich and rewarding theatre—with an excellent script and direction, experienced actors and a devotion to the moment.”

Mating Dance of the Werewolf

MATING DANCE

MATING DANCE OF THE WEREWOLF
by Mark Stein

Sept 27 – Oct 15

Ken is a detective who suspects he is being stalked. Oddly enough, he thinks he likes it. When finally confronted by Abby, a painfully shy young woman with a disarmingly forthright manner, he is unable to resist his profound attraction to her. Despite warning signs, he soon finds himself deeply involved in the most terrifying relationship he could never have imagined. Mating Dance of the Werewolf is an unorthodox romance that looks at how infatuation influences our willingness to suspend disbelief. This is a play that will nudge you into the Halloween spirit.

“A refreshing take on the werewolf genre… everyone has their moments… Fraser-Buchanan steals every scene with an intense, wild, feral, wantonness… I was hooked… quirky, humourous.”  CBC On the Island  David Lennam

“A giant theatrical mystery, charged with danger from the get-go… the cast of Mating Dance of the Werewolf fully embrace a world where darkest desires and urges run amok… take a walk on the wild side with them and experience the exhilarating thrill of the hunt.”  I Have My Own Life to Live  Janis Lacouvee

Shockheaded Peter

shock-headed

SHOCKHEADED PETER  by Julian Crouch, Phelim McDermott & The Tiger Lillies

 Nov 30 – Dec 17

This “Junk Opera” (a term used to describe the work of The Tiger Lillies, an English trio of cabaret-style musicians) is based upon the German cautionary-tales book for children: Struwwelpeter (1845) by Heinrich Hoffmann. The music is an intoxicating blend of Eastern European gypsy with French-style cabaret, and a sprinkling of melodic heart-rending ballad. The lyrics – in a very darkly comic manner – demonstrate what happens to little children who misbehave. The presentation style is one of puppetry, pantomime, story telling, and orchestrated mayhem. Local band, The Party On High Street – who have so brilliantly accompanied past musicals at Theatre Inconnu (including Alice by Tom Waits) – will be back to provide eclectic musicianship for a host of glorious local voices. It’s the season when the “man in red” is “gonna find out who’s naughty or nice” so let Shockheaded Peter set you on the right path.

“It’s like a demented, itinerant troupe from another time has mysteriously surfaced in Victoria. This one will appeal to young folk 10 and older as well as adults. If you find traditional Christmas entertainments saccharine and wholesome, Shockheaded Peter may be just the palate cleanser you’re looking for.”  Times Colonist

“If the idea of one more “holiday special” makes you unhinged… then the macabre, bizarre, perverse stylings of Theatre Inconnu’s Shockheaded are for you. Prepare to cackle gleefully… Tim Gosley’s puppet creations are a wonder… Judging from audience reaction on opening night, Theatre Inconnu has, once again, hit a profound chord with programming that appeals to the twisted side of human nature.”  Janis Lacouve I Have My Own Life to Live

“The puppets are amazingly horrific and watching the actors’ faces as they maneuvered them around the stage was more entertaining than the way children were killed off.” Nexus

“This is funny… daring and inventive and bizarre… an ambitious production… the uber-intimacy makes it work all the more well…. The cast is having a ball and the material is just so damn bizarre… Only Theatre Inconnu would put something this different on stage. God bless them everyone.”  CBC On the Island

“Shockheaded Peter, currently playing at Theatre Inconnu in Fernwood is the perfect antidote for anyone getting overwhelmed with the sugar-sweet holiday cheer… There wasn’t a single weak link in the ensemble, and same goes for the band… and I honestly can’t remember the last time I laughed that hard at a play before. Who knew watching something so macabre could be so fun?” CVV Magazine
