The Shadow in the Water

The run of this show is over.

This play by local award-winning playwright David Elendune – and directed by award winning-director Ian Case – was a recent sold-out hit at the Victoria Fringe Festival. It is a highly personal and poignant tale of love, loss, and sharks… for the event that simmers under the surface of the play, and drives its themes, is the 1916 Jersey Shore shark attacks (long reputed to be the inspiration for the movie Jaws).  As Mary nears the end of her life, she immerses herself in a retrospective journey, guided by Sharon; a mysterious presence, and necessary witness.  The Shadow in the Water reminds us that our experiences, for better or worse, are what have made us who we are.  Will Mary embrace her experiences and come to terms with a life full of both rewards and regrets?  David Elendune – with great empathy – helps us to understand the complexity of life lived.

“So, smile in the room, and cry in the corridor, for it’s another beautiful day in Hell.” (from the play)

David’s play,  Good Night Uncle Joe is playing in England and Sweden this year, and his play,  The Day Before Tomorrow has recently be awarded mentorship at the Belfry Theatre.

East of Berlin

The run of this show is over.

In 2007, Hannah Moscovitch burst upon the Canadian theatre scene with this, her first produced full length play. Governor General award-winning playwright Moscovitch questions redemption, love, guilt, and the sins of the father in East of Berlin. This is one of her most emotionally gripping works. As young Rudi uncovers the mystery of his father’s past, his own present and future are forever altered. Sarah, the young daughter of a Holocaust victim, enters the Rudi’s world, and the growing closeness between them is challenged as Rudi uncovers the role his father played in Sarah’s tragedy.

Commencing & Subway – 2 one-act plays by Jane Shepard

The run of this show is over.

Jane Shepard has crafted two wonderfully entertaining one-act plays that explore with humour and empathy the need to share the human experience with another.

In Commencing a flower delivery to the wrong address sets up a comedy of errors.  Arlin, a gay woman, delivers flowers to Kelli, a straight woman. Kelli is expecting a visit from a straight male blind date. The very clever dialogue makes the extended misunderstanding plausible as well as ridiculously outrageous; leading to both “laugh-out-loud” and tender moments, as they come to realize that they are both much more alike than they had initially thought.

A similar theme, with more serious undertones, is explored in Subway.  Two women – Alice and Darcy – hooked up at a gay bar are now waiting together in a subway station, contemplating extending their passionate encounter.  Will the fact that Alice is straight and Darcy is gay prevent a growing closeness between them?  While they interact, layers of “personality” are slowly stripped away; and as they become more vulnerable with each other, it becomes apparent that what they need from each other involves much more than just a sexual encounter.

“A powerful emotion connection with the audience… a quirky, oddly life-affirming evening out at the funky little Fernwood theatre… touching, heart-wrenching and ultimately satisfying.” Adrian Chamberlain (Victoria Critic)

“I’ve seen two great one-acts in my life, [Edward Albee’s] Zoo Story and this one [Commencing].” –NYTheatre.com
“Edgy, original, and with a darkly comic humanity… Jane writes incredibly rich and truthful female characters not often seen on stage.”  theatermania.com

The Black Rider – The Casting of the Magic Bullets

Theatre Inconnu is excited to announce this December’s holiday season offering of the musical The Black Rider – The Casting of the Magic Bullets, by Tom Waits and William S. Burroughs.  Eight years ago, Theatre Inconnu mounted the Tom Waits musical Alice.  Since then the company has been eager to once again bring the wonderfully eclectic music of this master back to Victoria.  This time his tunes are supported by the deliciously poetic script of the great beat poet, William S. Burroughs. Theatre Network aptly describes the work as: “a wickedly sensuous world where nothing is what it seems; the devil sings, the animals laugh… a bizarre and macabre musical.”  Working with local celebrated artists – musical director Brooke Maxwell, choreographer Sylvia Hosie, and costume designer Linda MacNaughton – Theatre Inconnu Artistic Director, Clayton Jevne, will guide a cast of local talented performers (headed by Rosemary Jeffery, fresh off her hit sold-out solo show Lady Day) in bringing this fascinating work to local audiences.  The story is a timeless tale based upon the German folk tale Der Freischütz (also made into an opera by Carl Maria von Weber).  A young man makes a pact with the dark-side in order to secure his heart’s desire; and to do that, he must become a great hunter; and the fastest route to that goal, of course, is to obtain some very special bullets (well, you get the picture…).  While not boasting seasonal merry jingle bells, Theatre Inconnu does guarantee an exciting musical and theatrical treat for mature audiences.
