Bull by Mike Bartlett

This black comedy delivers a blistering expose on work-place bullying. Bartlett is one of England’s most celebrated modern playwrights, and his razor-sharp wit – combined with his remarkable gifts for creating dialogue and character – keep our allegiances in constant flux. Rooting for the good guys isn’t as easy as it might seem when we’re never sure who the good guys really are.

For those who love nasty humour, there’s horrible fun afoot at Theatre Inconnu… a bracing evisceration of office politics.” Adrian Chamberlain, Times Colonist, Victoria

“Although Bull is often painful to take in, it’s brilliant and very much worth seeing.”

Emily Welch, Nexus, Victoria

Directer: Don Keith
Cast: Rebecca Elliott, Nolan Fidyk, James Johnson, Alan Penty
Stage Manager: Brianna de Jong

Witch by Jen Silverman

Tickets for this show are on sale now.

Silverman has taken a 17th century play (The Witch of Edmonton by Rowley, Decker, & Ford) and infused it with modern sensibilities and vernacular to give us a comedic fable with serious undertones. Opportunism is creating havoc in the Duke’s household as Satan’s apprentice works her mischief, and Elizabeth – the village outcast with more sense than all combined – creates a magic that threatens to derail the best laid devilish plans.

“full of wit and creativity… a great choice for an evening out.”

The Shoemaker’s Son by Amira Abdel-Malek

We are excited to bring you this delightful Second Stage presentation.
Please note that this show is NOT part of our 4-show subscription season. If you are a subscriber, your subscription admission is NOT applicable to this show.

What happens when you assemble the real-life experiences of a former refugee, who left Egypt in the 1970s, from the perspective of his daughter, a Mixed kid who came of age in the pre-and-post 9/11 era? What happens when you take their stories, add some whimsy from the 1001 Nights, and infuse them with a bit of good old post-structuralist theory? Now put all this into a blender, together with a dash of the absurd, a pinch of melodrama, some light, shadow, a projectors of course, and what do you get? Well, you get the zany, hyper-world of The Shoe Maker’s Son. Using a variety of performance techniques including story-telling and object puppetry, Amira brings to life this heart-warming tale of her father’s migration from Egypt in the 1970’s.

Performed by Amira Abdel-Malek
Directed by Timothy Gosley
Musical development by Douglas Hensley
Accompanying music by Tim Personn (of the band Grimwood)

Illustrations by Sophie Fuldauer

Pepe by Malou Jacob

Online tickets now on sale

Theatre Inconnu is proud to present this show as a co-production with the Victoria Bayanihan Creative Collective

José Rizal – “Pepe” – (1861-1896) is one of the most revered figures in Philippine history. He was a multifaceted intellectual, a novelist, a celebrated physician, and a political activist. He is best known for his writings that inspired the Philippine revolution and ultimately led to his execution by the Spanish colonizers. Rizal’s martyrdom ended over 300 years of oppressive Spanish tyranny by giving birth to the Philippines as an independent nation. In the words of the playwright: “Pepe focuses on the roots of Rizal’s oppression while exploring his relationship with his family and country, always reminding the audience that although a hero, he was first and foremost an ordinary human being, an ordinary Filipino.” Director Francis Matheu will bring Malou Jacob’s play to life using a variety of presentation techniques.

Malou Jacob is a Filipino playwright and a recipient of the S.E.A. Write Award and was also a creative consultant of the Communication Foundation for Asia. To read cast member Sheila Alonzo’s interview with Malou Jacob, CLICK HERE.

Stupid Fucking Bird by Arron Posner

Tickets now on sale online (see below).

While remaining relatively true plot-wise to Chekhov’s late 19th century masterwork The Seagull, Posner has created an irreverent, but often poignant modern adaptatio. Con is a wannabe writer.  He is in love with Nina.  Nina is a wannabe actor.  She is in love with Trigorin. Trigorin is a novelist with connections.  Emma is Con’s mother, a successful actor, and also Trigorin’s lover.  Dev is Con’s best friend.  He is in love with Masha.  Masha is in love with Con… Something’s gotta give! Posner’s genius lies in his capacity to tread a very fine line with tragedy on one side; farce on the other.  Like Chekhov, he grabs the big themes by the throat and shakes them down for all they’re worth: What is art? What is love? What is family? What is life? And ultimately: WHAT IS THE POINT? These are the questions Posner’s characters ask themselves, each other, and (directly at times) the audience.

“The production features strong performances… and keeps the audience laughing throughout… witty and fun, but also true in essential ways to Chekhov’s great play. Recommended.”  Victoriatheatrereviews.com

“A self-consciously irreverent romp… production boasts young performers with energy to burn… complex, ambitious stuff”.”
Times Colonist, Victoria
