The Shoemaker’s Son by Amira Abdel-Malek

We are excited to bring you this delightful Second Stage presentation.

What happens when you assemble the real-life experiences of a former refugee, who left Egypt in the 1970s, from the perspective of his daughter, a Mixed kid who came of age in the pre-and-post 9/11 era? What happens when you take their stories, add some whimsy from the 1001 Nights, and infuse them with a bit of good old post-structuralist theory? Now put all this into a blender, together with a dash of the absurd, a pinch of melodrama, some light, shadow, a projectors of course, and what do you get? Well, you get the zany, hyper-world of The Shoe Maker’s Son. Using a variety of performance techniques including story-telling and object puppetry, Amira brings to life this heart-warming tale of her father’s migration from Egypt in the 1970’s.

Amira Abdel-Malek is a graduate of UVic’s School of Child and Youth Care’s Master’s program with past experience in community and applied theatre. While raising her daughter Shireen she has been developing The Shoe Maker’s Son during a micro-residency with Intrepid and Puente Theatres.

This winter holiday season, Theatre Inconnu attempts to answer that burning question: What will happen to the Peanuts gang as they struggle with teenage angst? Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead provides the answer. This award-winning play by Bert Royal is an irresistible portrayal of some familiar characters (who bear a striking resemblance to Charles M. Schulz’s iconic kids) entering young adulthood. Whimsy is tempered by the challenges facing today’s youth.

Theatre Inconnu is proud to present the world premiere of this one-act (45-minute) comedy by internationally acclaimed author Rachel Wyatt penned especially for Theatre Inconnu. This play captures the hopes and trepidations of Jared, a 30-year old struggling actor working as a barista. His interactions with customers, and insights into their lives, provide a heartfelt snapshot of what it means to be human. At times we laugh with Jared at the eccentricities of his customers, and at others, we share his sincere concern over their struggles, all the while gaining an appreciation of Jared’s own challenges in chasing his life’s dream. Jared will leave you with a full heart and a cheerful tear in your eye. To add to the magic, the play will be accompanied by a series of projections of wonderful character drawings by the performer.

Clayton Jevne has headed Theatre Inconnu since its inception, and has functioned as director, actor, or designer for scores of production.

The Canadian premiere of James Johnson’s one-act (50-minute) dark comedy, The Audition, is every actor’s audition nightmare come to true! AND it is also a universal and powerful statement on the responsibilities of those in positions of authority, and the consequences when the power inherent in that position is abused. Lauren, the innocent young actor, is hoping this just might be the audition that will lead to her big break. Her auditioner, Stella – the director from hell – holds the key to the door of opportunity. Those “in the biz” may recognize the outrageous (and sometimes pushed to extreme) paces that Lauren is put through, while others will gain a dramatic insight into the challenges and absurdities that can take place during an audition. How far will an actor go to get the role? And how far can Stella push Lauren before Lauren decides to push back?

Internationally acclaimed writer Rachel Wyatt has penned Jared – a new one-act (45-minute) comedy – especially for Theatre Inconnu. The world premiere of this insightful one-actor play captures the hopes and trepidation of a young man on the verge of committing to an exciting, yet challenging, life path. Jared is a 30-year old struggling actor currently working as a barista in a modest coffee bar. As his regular customers enter and leave, his on-going musings – as he carries out his tasks – provide a rich and heartfelt snapshot of what it means to be human. At times we laugh along with Jared at the eccentricities of his customers, and at others, we share his sincere concern over their respective struggles. All the while, we are gaining an appreciation of Jared’s own struggle as he prepares to break free from a life in which he can offer – like any good “bar-tender” – a sympathetic ear and cheerful pick-me-up for others, to a life in which he can begin to realize his own dreams. This play will leave you with a full heart and a cheerful tear in your eye. To add to the magic, the play will be “accompanied” by a series of delightful character drawings done by the performer, Rudy Smith.
