Alien Creature – A Visitation from Gwendolyn MacEwen by Linda Griffiths
Gwendolyn MacEwen was one of Canada’s greatest poets and Linda Griffiths was one of Canada’s finest playwrights. Griffiths has created a magical text of story-telling in which the ghost of MacEwen visits a contemporary audience to tell tales of her life, her work, her inspiration – and her death.  Griffiths does not try to emulate the inimitable style of MacEwen’s writing, but wisely, and theatrically, follows her own instincts as a playwright so that we are in awe of both the content and the form. This play was a Governor General Award nominee.

Mike Bartlett is one of most exciting and acclaimed new British playwrights. He examines with wit and sensitivity the confusion around sexual identity. The main character, John, has been in a stable relationship with his boyfriend for years. But when he takes a break, he accidentally falls in love with a woman. He doesn’t know which way to turn. His boyfriend is willing to wait for him to make a decision, but so is his girlfriend. John must decide who he is, and what he is. This Olivier Award winning play tackles head-on, a subject that is gaining wider public discussion.

 If We Were Birds, by one of Canada’s most accomplished young playwrights, was a 2011 Governor General Award winning play. The story – based upon the ancient Greek poem Metamorphoses by Ovid – tells the tale surrounding the brutal rape of Philomena (daughter of King Pandion of Athens) by her brother-in-law, King Tereus of Thrace. Shields engages in a harrowing exploration of violence and revenge, focusing upon the treatment and suffering of women in times of conflict, with contemporary references to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Nanking, and Berlin. Shields incorporates a full spectrum of theatrical style and genre, using her superior poetical skill to create a mesmerizing script. Under the guidance of accomplished director Wendy Merk, (The Penelopiad at Langham Court Theatre) Theatre Inconnu boasts an ensemble cast of talented local actors who are fully committed to tackling this challenging topic with skill and courage.

Jack Hodgins is an internationally lauded local writer whose original book of short stories of the same name won the Eaton’s Book Prize and was nominated for the Governor General’s Award.

Charles Tidler is a local playwright, novelist, and poet of international renown. He is Chalmers Outstanding Play Award recipient, as well as a Governor General Award nominee.

Spit Delaney is a steam locomotive operator at a pulp mill.

After decades of rising at 4am to fire up his beloved steam engine, Spit finds himself without this job when the pulp mill replaces “Old Number One” with a modern diesel engine. Spit declares that he is: “Not sure of where or how I belong.” Spit’s relationship with his family and the world around him is thrown in turmoil as he doggedly tries to hang onto an identity that is no longer relevant. This is the stuff of comedy, and yet it is also the stuff of the human condition. As we laugh at Spit’s misguided struggle to stay the same, we empathize with his loneliness at being left behind while others move on – more readily adapting to a changing world. But there are magical forces at work here, guiding Spit – kicking and screaming – towards a deeper understanding of himself and an unexpected outcome.
